It remains unclear how the brain chooses which memories to replay, and whether the same process applies as cleanly to skills and emotions as it does to facts. Most human evidence is correlational, so a firm causal claim is still debated.

Even so, the convergence of behavioural, brain-imaging and animal evidence makes a strong case that sleep is not passive downtime but an active stage of memory formation — with real stakes for students and shift workers.
